Work began in 1815 to a design by Antonio Porta of Trieste, and it was finished only in 1882. After a long closure it has reopened to visitors, who climb to its summit for the panorama it opens up.

It rises beside the Parish Church of St Blaise, the largest parish church in Istria at 56.20 by 31.60 metres under a 25-metre cupola, built over 40 years and consecrated on the saint's feast day. The church's collection keeps 370 registered relics.
