Self-drive motorboats, licence-free boats and skippered hire
The licence is the first question. Most speedboats here, six to nearly eight metres long with outboards of 100 HP and more, need a valid boat leader's licence, but small boats of about five metres with 5 or 6 HP engines can be taken out without one after a briefing, and every operator can add a skipper for those who would rather not drive. One outfit at Marina Polesana gives licence holders a practical hour on docking and manoeuvring before they set off.
Fuel is usually extra: boats leave full and come back refuelled, or the fuel used is paid at the mooring. Deposits are taken before departure, often in cash, and bareboat hires stay close to shore, within three nautical miles at a Fažana firm and 2 km at a Medulin one, so longer trips such as the crossing to Cres go with a skipper. The routes follow the base: Brijuni from Fažana, the Porer lighthouse and Cape Kamenjak from Medulin, and Rovinj on longer skippered days.
