The lower part of the rear wall, visible from outside, dates from the early 4th century, and fragments of a 5th to 6th century floor mosaic, carrying the names of worshippers who paid for it, survive around the altar.

A fire in 1242 led to several rebuildings, which explains the Gothic windows of the side aisles, and a late Renaissance facade was added in the early 16th century. A cross-shaped baptistery that stood in front of the church from the 5th century was demolished in 1885. Together with the Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč it is one of the two seats of the Diocese of Poreč and Pula, and the neighbouring church of St Thomas, patron saint of Pula, stood beside it until 1657.
