Pula Car rental

At the airport at Valtursko polje, which the Istria and Pula tourist boards place about 5 km from the city centre, rental companies have desks in the arrivals area and the main hall of the terminal. The Croatia-wide networks among them take one-way rentals to their offices in other Croatian cities, such as Zagreb, Split, Zadar and Dubrovnik, while smaller Pula firms, one trading since 2001, work from offices in town and bring the car to the airport, a hotel or a campsite instead.

Terms differ more than the headline price suggests. Some companies include unlimited mileage while others give a daily allowance pooled across the hire, minimum ages and licence years vary by firm and car class, and the deposit is usually a pre-authorisation on a credit card in the driver's name. Some operators void their cover if damage is not reported to the police, and at the airport firms taking the car across a border needs prior permission and a cross-border fee.

In town, the old-town core is residents-only parking and its pedestrian zones are closed by bollards, so drivers staying in the centre leave the car in a public car park outside it. Heading out, the Istrian Y motorway begins at the Pula junction and runs north towards Rovinj, Umag and Rijeka.
