Making the most of your port day
A typical call leaves time for the essentials at an easy pace. Start with the Arena and the exhibition on olive growing and wine in its underground passages, then walk through the Arch of the Sergii to the Forum and the Temple of Augustus. From there the choice is the Kaštel and its museum on the hill, or the Zerostrasse tunnels dug beneath it in the First World War. On a short call, keep lunch in the old town so all-aboard never gets tight.

- The port authority receives cruise ships at the Riječki gat, one of the two piers in the city harbour it reserves for passenger traffic
- Port to Old Town
- The Arena and the old town are the reason to go ashore. Check your cruise line's port notes for the landing point and any shuttle before you set off
- All-aboard
- Be back at the gangway around 30 minutes before your posted departure, plus the walk back to the pier. Confirm the exact time before you leave the ship
- The Arena
- The Roman amphitheatre, begun under Augustus and finished under Titus, is the one sight every call should include. Its underground passages hold an exhibition on olive growing and wine in ancient Istria
- Taxis
- Agree or check the fare before setting off. Fažana, for the Brijuni boats, and the coves at Verudela are the obvious runs out of the centre
- Beyond the centre
- Brijuni National Park is a boat from Fažana, about fifteen minutes across, then a guided tour of Veliki Brijun. It fits a long port day, though not a short call
